Lost in Place
A Visual and Place-Based resource by Glenn Anthony
@ the center of this particular creative universe, one is going to find a lot of places as they continue to be a source of inspiration, ideas, creativity, and innovation as well as occasionally causing one to adopt a slightly nomadic lifestyle from time to time.
Of course, places are so much more than a resource for the artist - be it in the form of an exciting location, suitable backdrop or setting for a story or film or the subject of an awesome picture; they are places first and they don't necessarily need cameras or text to be important.
Sense of place, something derived from human experience in a landscape is a unique situation where physical activity and sensory awareness cause the relationship between person and place to alter - sometimes initiating a re-evaluation of one’s aesthetic sensibilities and actions and furthermore the subjective nature of perception itself as we begin to adapt to the unique qualities and conditions of the place in question.
Appreciation and sense of place can offer more than a kind of geographical reasoning; meaningful real-time engagement in environments, be it a shared or individual experience, can provide purpose for being there and in a time when the world is becoming more mechanistic and techno-dependent, recognition of place and practice of mindfulness has never been so important.
That is not to say virtual places cannot be important as they too can be instrumental in offering information and insights into what can be unreachable places. Lost in Place celebrates this facility whilst acknowledging, in the first instance, that there is still no substitute for the real thing.
In some ways, we could consider places as teachers; providing a unique map by way of their distinctive features toward a greater understanding of our evolving imaginative, emotional, and cognitive architecture.
Indeed, this kind of exploration may cause one to experience a renewed appreciation and reverence for places but it need not always signal an outwardly creative response.
Sometimes simply being there, experiencing this sense of place, acquiring new memories, or perhaps revisiting old ones can suffice as we each continue in our search for reason, meaning, and expression in our lives.
